Rahul Chauhan completed his MFA (2010) & BFA (2007) from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. A gold medal recipient at the university, he has won a number of awards and scholarships including the HRD Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, India (2012-13)
He explores various instances and reflections through a colourful display of allegories depicted by animal forms. Mostly figurative, his paintings are a cultural experiment which attempt to eternalize certain concepts and ideals narrated in the history of the region. Travel plays an important role in his practice whereby they become a search, involving a range of anecdotes and experiences. In his own words he describes them as ‘cultural impacts’; a constant reaffirming or bridging of notions from the past and present. Looking back, the present appears as a transitory phase in the wide expanse of histories and cultures.
His palette usually consists of bright colours which help to negotiate the intensity or gravity of our times by its celebration. The surreal, allegoric narrations in his paintings are interactions with various new spaces which have broadened his vision.
