Born in Nagpur, India, in 1987, Parag Sonarghare is an accomplished artist with a diverse artistic journey. He holds a Master of Visual Arts (M.V.A.) in Art History and Aesthetics from M.S. University, Baroda, India, and completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Painting in 2008 from Govt. Chitrakala Mahavidyalaya, Nagpur University, Maharashtra, India.
Sonarghare's art is an exploration of male figures, specifically older individuals from the lower socio-economic strata. In his striking, larger-than-life canvas works, these subjects bear the physical marks of time—wrinkles, wounds, and imperfections—yet exude an undeniable sense of resilience. Through his art, Sonarghare brings to the forefront one of society's most marginalized segments, highlighting their extraordinary stories within the ordinary.
Parag Sonarghare's artistic journey has been marked by numerous significant exhibitions and residencies. In 2023, he was invited by artist and curator Riyas Komu to exhibit a monumental painting in "Sea A Boiling Vessel" at the Kashi Hallegua House in Kochi. In 2022, he served as an artist-in-residence at Casa Cerrito in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Notable group exhibitions include "Portraits of the Self II" at Gallery Maskara, Mumbai (2021) and "Burning House" at Museum Sztuki, Lodz, Poland (2020). He was also part of an exhibition at Kunstsilo Altdorf, Altdorf, Switzerland (2019), where he held an artist-in-residence position.
Parag Sonarghare's artistic contributions extend beyond traditional canvas works. Between 2017 and 2021, he engaged in numerous public art projects, creating wall murals in Mumbai, Kochi, Varanasi, Switzerland, and Goa. He has also ventured into performance art, with notable performances including "Being the Other" at KHOJ International Artist Association in Delhi and "AHAMBRAHMASMI" at various locations, including Delhi, Nagpur, and Baroda.
His artworks find a place of honor in renowned collections worldwide, including those of Karen & Robert Duncan in the USA, The Huerlimann Collection in Switzerland, and the Antoine de Galbert Collection in France, among other significant collections across the US, Europe, and India.
