Naina Dalal’s prints and paintings consistently convey the inner lives of her subjects: women, men, animals, and even inanimate objects defined by their relationship to humans who may or may not be present in the frame. This interiority, focusing on what is expressed during silences or what is inexpressible, imbues her art with a particular mood, or bhava, that primarily evokes the rasa of Karuna, compassion. In rare cases, as when she deals with the subject of female foeticide, a little rage, or krodha, comes through. Now and then, there are hints of pleasure, laughter and fear (rati, hasa and bhaya), but the dominant tone is one of sorrow, grief or melancholy, all variants of Soka.
Dalal's art works adorns public and private collections across India and abroad including prestigious institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Berlin Museum of Indian Art.
